Karnataka rice wars: Beneficiaries to get cash in lieu of rice

After failing to procure enough rice at a good price from both the states and Central corporations, the Karnataka Cabinet on Wednesday announced that it would pay low income families the cash equivalent to the 5 kg of rice the new regime had promised them, which would add to 5 kg from the Centre. Every BPL person’s account would be credited with Rs 170 per month - going by the Food Corporation of India’s (FCI) standard rate of Rs 34 per kg of rice - from July 1 under the regime’s ambitious Anna Bhagya scheme.
