Monsoon rains swing from 10 per cent deficit to surplus in eight days

Bountiful rain in many parts of India in early July has bridged the country's rainfall deficit, according to the India Meteorological Department. While the eastern and northeastern region recorded a 17% rain deficiency, north India received 59% excess rainfall. However, below-normal precipitation is still forecasted for many areas in northwest, northeast, and southeast peninsular India. Late arrival of monsoon caused a two-week delay in crop sowing in June.
