Cane-derived ethanol prices may be hiked to woo investors

The Indian government is likely to raise the price of ethanol derived from sugarcane juice or syrup in order to incentivize investments in the ethanol industry. Currently priced at ₹65.60 per litre, the Indian Sugar Mills' Association has been urging the government to increase the price by ₹4 per litre. The industry needs to invest ₹17,000 crore to produce 11 billion litres of ethanol, with a target of achieving 20% blending with petrol by 2025. This move is part of a broader effort to increase the use of biofuels and reduce reliance on costly crude oil imports.
